President Barak Obama opposes legalizing same-sex marriage on a federal level but supports civil unions and equal rights for same-sex couples.
I believe that President Barack Obamas stance on legalization of same-sex marriages is very consistent with his beliefs in equal rights and opportunites for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation. His position is stating that he believes homosexuals should have all the rights any other person is guaranteed, he agrees with letting all people regardless of sexual orientation receive benefits such as preferential tax treatment, spousal Social Security and veteran's benefits, favorable immigration laws, property and support rights upon divorce and intestate succesion. What Obama does not seem to support is the legalization of same sex marriages seen by a federal level. An idea as to why, might be because it conflicts with his religion and he would like to see the institution of marriage being kept sacred. By supporting civil unions and equal rights for same-sex couples, it shows that Obama remains sympathetic to the rights of the citizens who classify as gay or lesbian, and would like to see them obtain any rights and benefits they need. Based off of these ideas I would confer that his stance on the legalization of same-sex couples remains consistent with his beliefs in equal rights and opportunites for all.
A response Obama would give to Nava and Dawidoffs argument would probably be that he would agree with all of their arguments and probably shares their same view, for what it seems is that since Obama first started out as President his view on the same marriages was completely different as to what he supports currently. You could say his view points on the subject have been evolving ever since.
I agree, Obama doesn't agree with same-sex marriage but he also doesn't support the legalization of same-sex marriage on the federal level. Obama's beliefs don't agree with same-sex marriage but as a president he has to understand the equal rights people have. As it says in the question, Obama opposes same-sex marriage on the federal level but supports civil unions and equal rights to same-sex couples. Obama understands that all humans are given equal rights and if he ever proposed an amendment banning same-sex marriage, then it would simply be taking away the rights of gays and lesbians. Also, Obama would most likely agree with Nava and Dawidoffs argument simply because it explains how gays would be denied their own rights.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you miss baller, Obamas belief does indeed lean towards supporting gay marriages and giving them the rights that all human beings deserve. But I do feel like Obama is a bit hypocritical for supporting on his own persona beliefs and not on the federal level. In the end I feel like Obama just stands strong against his beliefs like his religion, he wouldn't let this problem go against his beliefs therefore he had to vote against it. Therefore he stands strong for his belief that gay or lesbians deserve their rights and its something he wouldn't go against because he stands strong. Obama believes in Nava and Dawidoffs argument mainly because they believe that everyone deserves their rights no matter what their sexual orientation is.
