Discussion #1 What I have learned
During the course of this semester, some of the things that i have learned is about critical thinking and why its important to use critical thinking when making an argument or making decisions, as well as how emotion can sometimes alter our decisions and play an important role. We also learned about the nature and limitations of human knowledge, different types of evidence and errors in thinking, we learned about what a fallacy was and the many different forms of a fallacy and how to recognize a fallacy in everyday arguments and conversations as well as discussing strategies that can be used to avoid making a fallacy. I also learned how to recognize the parts of an argument and break it down into the premise, the conclusion, and premise and conclusion indicators. Another one of the important things we learned is how to distinguish between deductive and inductive arguments, and evaluate the characteristics of each, and lastly we learned about mass media and their marketing advertising techniques.

I thought you highlighted a lot of important concepts from comm 41. I agree that one of the most important things that we can take from this class is how important it is to be critical thinkers. I don't think the textbook can stress that enough. In order for society to have intelligent minds that are capable of picking something apart and analyzing it we must learn to think critically. Fallacy was another important concept you choose that I thought was a good one. We must know the different forms of fallacies. It is definitely important to have the ability to recognize it and also avoid using fallacies ourselves.
ReplyDeleteYou are right. A lot of the things that we covered this semester really helped to show us about being better critical thinkers. I feel like a lot of us do not use our critical thinking skills as much as we should especially with all that the mass media is doing. The marketing and advertising strategies have become some what deceiving now a days which is why I believe that it is important for all of us to be able to distinguish the type of fallacy they use. We need to be able to recognize the false information they try to tell us because we are usually so fast to believe people.
ReplyDeleteI believe taking this class definitely broadened my knowledge about critical thinking and how we use it when we make an argument or make decisions. Emotions definitely affect our decision making because the pressure causes us to lean toward a decision, which is not thought clearly in the process. Evidence also played a big roll in this class because we learned about the different types we could use to make our points stronger. Breaking down argument helps us point out the fallacies of each argument and help us respond back by taking it step by step. I was able to use these lessons and apply it to real life situations.
